Kern Licence a face Licence

Kern draws variable faces and refuses to show them as static pictures. A typeface is a range, not a single weight, so a specimen should be a thing you move, not a thing you look at.

We are two people and a proofing press in a room in Naarm. Ilse draws, Tomas engineers, and the press settles arguments about ink. We have shipped five families since 2019, each one a single variable file that does the work a whole catalogue of static weights used to do.

The thesis is simple and we have built the whole studio on it. Type moves. It moved on the press as the pressure changed, it moved in the hand as the nib turned, and it moves now as an axis. A foundry that shows you a flat picture of a weight is selling you a corpse of the thing.

So every specimen on this site is live. Scroll and the faces throw to their extremes and settle. Pass the cursor and a glyph resolves. The wordmark above is a real surface you can push. Nothing here is a screenshot of type. It is the type.

We even share an easing.

One cubic-bezier runs every move on this site, from a specimen's axis throw to the cursor's lerp. A slow arrival, a fast response, nothing lazy in the middle.

Who draws it
  • Ilse Renko

    Type design

Draws the romans and argues for the italics.

  • Tomas Field

    Font engineering

Builds the axes and breaks them on purpose.

Colophon

Set in the foundry's own house cut. Built as a static Astro site, animated with GSAP and a single WebGL surface, on one ultramarine and a sheet of warm paper.
